Bathroom Refresh: Towels, Storage and Everyday Comfort
5 min readUpdated October 2026
A bathroom does not need a renovation to feel better. Towel quality, where things hang, and how much is left on the edges of the bath do most of the work. These are the decisions worth spending on.
Towels: weight and fibre
Towels are measured in GSM — grams per square metre. Around 400–600 GSM is the comfortable middle: absorbent and quick enough to dry between uses. Very heavy towels feel luxurious but dry slowly and can stay damp on a rail, which is exactly what you do not want in a small, humid room.
Long-staple cotton and cotton-modal blends stay soft through more washes than short-fibre cotton, which is what causes the scratchy feel after a few months.
Storage that drains
Anything that holds water will eventually rust, discolour or smell. Choose a shower caddy with drainage slots and rust-resistant coating, and prefer shelves that let items dry rather than closed boxes in a wet zone.
Hang towels with space between them. Doubling towels on one hook keeps them damp and shortens their life.
Keep the surfaces clear
Move daily-use items into one caddy and store everything else. A bath mat that actually grips is both a comfort and a safety improvement — look for a textured or suction-backed base rather than a loose cotton mat on a tiled floor.
